First Presbyterian Church, San Jose; Joining hands with Christ in the Inner City

STEWARDSHIP REPORT - February 2010

Treasurer's Report:

The financial state of First Presbyterian Church continues to be tenuous at best. The fixed expenses, and maintenance and repair costs continue to increase while our giving has remained the same. However, the church was blessed once again with a wonderful gift from the Lomeli family to be used to support the worship and music program.

The Session called upon our trust fund for $120,000 to help us with operating and maintenance costs, and to pay off the line of credit owed the San Jose Presbytery. Without this assistance the church would no longer sustain itself.

For 2010, the pledged income is up. The programs supported by the congregation, like Sacred Heart and the Waterline Program, continue to grow and enhance our mission in the community. The membership in PACT has been most rewarding.

The 2009 budget and 2010 projected budget:

2009 Budget: $254,244.00
2009 Income: $269, 884.00
2009 Expenses: $269.428.00
2010 Budget: $230,000.00

Stewrdship Update

Good Stewardship

Our church is completing a wonderful year, and now is the time to plan for next year.
Unfortunately our financial situation has not kept up with our many other successful activities.  Our giving to missions and other local needs has truly been a blessing, however, we are in danger of not keeping our own doors open.

So with a prayerful heart would you dig deep and submit your pledge for the 2009 year with a 10% more than last year?  Pledges are due now.  Our budget is developed based on the amount of money pledged by our members.  Remember to include a one-time amount of $26 in order to meet our per capita responsibility to Presbytery.

Why do we need more money, you ask?  Our fixed costs, such as utilities, property assessments and insurance, have increased, as well the need for general maintenance and repair.  As our building ages there are more needs to repair heating systems, and fix leaky roofs.  Salaries, health insurance and workers compensation costs have also increased, but our level of giving has not.  We tap our endowment fund each month to help with operating costs, however, the fund has taken a very large hit with the downturn in the market.

We understand you are also having a difficult time making ends meet.  This is a very challenging time, but please dig deep and keep San Jose First alive and well.  This is such a special church, there is no other like it as we truly “Experience God’s love, and extend Christ’s hand” to our church mission and community.

Yours truly,

Charlotte Powers
FPCSJ Treasurer and Trustee Chairperson
